ENOCH H. YOUNG,
NOW BEING TRIED FOR THE MURDER OF ISRAEL BENSLEY, AT WALDO,
MARION COUNTY, FEB. 25, 1880.
Enoch H. Young was born in Washington county, Pa.,
Feb. 23d, 1854. He is 26 years old, has a wife and three children.
CRIMINAL COURT
TRIAL OF ENOCH H. YOUNG
FOR THE MURDER OF
ISRAEL BENSLEY.
AT WALDO, MARION CO.,
FEBRUARY 25TH, 1880.
SEVENTH DAY OF THE TRIAL
Court convened at 1:40 p.m., to-day, with Judge Beer
on the bench.
The prisoner and his counsel, also counsel for the State,
were present at the opening of court.
The Judge limited the arguments till to-morrow (Tuesday)
night, stating that if necessary they would have night sessions, to get
through at the appointed time.
The Prosecutor proceeded to read authorities in regard to
what constitutes the crime of murder in the first degree.
As we go to press, Garberson, one of the Young's
counsel, is making his plea.
The case is losing interest, as public opnion seems to be
drifting all in one cirection.
The audience in the court room to-day was not very great.
Quite a number of ladies were in attendance, remaining but a short time.
HARVEY KENYON, the unfortunate man who was so suddenly
mentally affected on Friday last, while on the witness stand, giving testimony
in the Young trial, is no better to day, if anything, he is worse.
He is now in the county jail, awaiting orders from the authorities respecting
his case. The examination will likely take place this evening before
Judge Matthews, and Kenyon will no doubt have to be sent
to Columbus for treatment. We are informed that he has been showing
signs of insanity for some time past. He has over 100 acres of good
land near Waldo; is in good circumstances; has a wife and four or five
children, of respectability. He was a good neighbor and well liked
by all. The above case is but one of many nowdays, it seems strange
to note. |
