William J. THOMPSON
Ms. __?__
Margaret HOLMES
Husband:  William J. THOMPSON
Birth:  1806/7, VA or GA
Death apparently:  1860-70
Occupations:  farmer, Baptist Clergyman
Marriage-1:
Wife-1:  Ms. __?__

The age difference between William and Margaret immediately suggests he would have had a prior wife, and the children born before 1840 support that he did.

Marriage-2:  23 Oct 1840, McMinn Co., TN
Wife-2:  Margaret HOLMES
Birth:  1820/1, NC or TN
Death:  aft. 1880 census
Occupation:  homemaker
Children with Wife-1 — born in GA:
1.  Margaret THOMPSON, b. 1834/5
2.  William Alexander Calhoun THOMPSON, b. 15 Jan 1838; d. 9 Jan 1929, Sisson Twp., Howell Co., MO

On William Alexander Calhoun's death certificate, his parents are listed as William THOMPSON & Margaret HOLMES.  Did the informant not know that Margaret was his stepmother?  Death certificates are notoriously inaccurate with regard to the birth information for the deceased (please see this discussion).  I also see no sign that Margaret HOLMES was in GA.

Children with Margaret HOLMES:
— born in TN, probably McMinn Co., TN:
3.  Charles J. THOMPSON, b. 1841/2
4.  Rachel THOMPSON, b. 1845/6
