Sources:

1.  Jordan R. Dodd, ed.  1993.  North Carolina Marriages:  Early to 1850.  Liahona Research, Orem, UT (Broderbund CD-229):  not found.

2.  1800 Census Images (online at Ancestry.com; extracted by Diana Gale Matthiesen):
1800 NC Rowan Co. p. 319 Widow Thompson 00000-00010-01
These data indicate:
No. & Sex  Age Class Therefore Born Individuals Inferred
1 female 26-44 1755-1774 = Eleanor?
1 slave all ages in or bef. 1800 = name unknown
It seems this record may be of a widowed Eleanor (CLARK) THOMPSON.  An early demise of this Sanders would explain why he seems to just disappear.  Still, proof is needed that this woman is, indeed, his widow.  There were no Sanders THOMPSONs in the index and no likely candidates, except this one for this widow.  Other THOMPSONs in Rowan County:  James, John, Joseph, Moses Sr., Moses Jr., and William.

3.  LDS.  Family Search: Internet Genealogy Service:  AF - Ancestral File (online at FamilySearch.org).

Comments:

The LDS Ancestral File shows one Sanders THOMPSON married to five women, but in reality these are three Sanders THOMPSONs.

There are two Sanders THOMPSONs in the 1830 census of KY:  one is the Sanders THOMPSON (b. 1790-95) in Christian Co., KY (who married Margaret "Peggy" BRASHER), and the other is the Sanders THOMPSON (b. 1786/7) in Hopkins Co., KY (who married Ms. __?__, Isabella DOSSETT, and Talitha __?__).  That there is a third Sanders THOMPSON is proven by the fact that both of the Sanders THOMPSONs in KY in 1830 were much too young to be our subject, the Sanders THOMPSON who married Eleanor CLARK in 1797 in NC.  Isabella Dossett and Talitha __?__ clearly belong to the Sanders THOMPSON from Hopkins County as they both died in the same county he did (viz., Ozark Co., MO).  The Sanders THOMPSON in Christian County married only once, not twice, to Margaret BRASHER, who is the same person as Peggy BRAZIER.
