Note:  The pamphlet for the Mission City Memorial Park cemetery shows Charles THOMPSON (1880-1971) as a son of our subject.  The census records do not support this connection.  Rather, they show Charles as the son of our subject's brother, Benjamin Franklin THOMPSON.  Please contact the cemetery (I already have) and request this error be corrected in the online document now — also that it be corrected if the pamphet is ever re-printed.

2.  1850 Census Every-Name-Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com):  Isaac THOMPSON (æ 24, b. IN) is living in what appears to be a boarding house in Sacramento City, Sacramento Co., CA (p. 139B).  He is shown as apparently running an "eating house," and his worth is $6000.  His widowed father and two of his brothers are also living in Sacramento (q.v.).  And, yes, he is known to have returned to Michigan to marry Anna.  Ann SMITH (æ 19, b. MI) is living in Berrien Co., MI (p. 245B), with her parents, Isaac SMITH (æ 49, b. KY) & Martha SMITH (æ 53, b. VA), plus an older brother.  Enilia (sic) Ann FLOREY (æ 10, b. IL) is living in Macon Dist., Macon Co., IL (pp. 135A-135B), with her parents, Israel FLOREY (æ 34, b. VA) & Elizabeth FLOREY (æ 36, b. KY), plus siblings.

3b.  1860 Census Every-Name-Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com):  Emma A. FLORRY (æ 21, b. IL) is living in Decatur, Macon Co., IL (p. 656), with her parents, Israel FLORRY (æ 49, b. VA) & Elizabeth FLORRY (æ 49, b. KY), plus siblings.

4b. 1870 Census Every-Name-Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com):  Emma FLORA (æ 31, b. IN) is living in Decatur, Macon Co., IL (p. 332), as a domestic servant in the household of a banker.  Listed with her is Ellsworth KAUFFMAN (æ 5, b. IL).  Note that vital information on servants or boarders is rarely accurate in the census because it is unlikely they are the informant (i.e., the actual informant may not have known or cared about the information for their employees being accurate).  The fact that Emma is using her maiden name does raise the question as to whether she was actually married to David B. KAUFMAN or, in fact, whether Ellsworth was actually her biological son; she may have adopted him.  More research is needed here.  A marriage record for David & Emily/Emma would settle the issue, but I haven't found one.

They've been married 26 years, not 40.  Jessie is John's wife.  The fact that Emily shows two children living suggests Ellsworth was her biological son.

Again, the fact that Emily shows two surviving children suggests Ellsworth was her biological child.

Sometimes adopted children are not differentiated from biological children, so while this record supports that he is her biological son, it's not absolute proof.  DNA testing of Ellsworth's descendants could resolve the issue.

11.  Public Member Trees (online at Ancestry.com):  three files here name second wife, "Emily Anna Carrie DeFleurey," without any source for the name and without naming parents.  She is "Emily A. C." in the 1910 census supporting possibly, "Carrie."  An Ancestry Message from James Florey disputs this name and asserts her origin is German, not French.  I'm not related to this family, so I'll leave resolution of the dispute to others.
