John TAPPAN
Martha BROWN
Ruth __?__
Husband:  John TAPPAN
Birth:  23 Apr 1651, Newbury, Essex Co., MA
Death:  26 Dec 1723, Salisbury, Essex Co., MA
Father:  Abraham TAPPAN
Mother:  Susanna TAYLOR
Marriage-1:  3 Sep 1688, Andover, Essex Co., MA
Wife-1:  Martha BROWNE / BROWN
Birth:  22 Dec 1667, Newbury, Essex Co., MA
Father:  James BROWN I
Mother:  Sarah CUTTING

Given that Martha appears to have ceased having children after 1702, it's probable that she died in or within a few years of 1702 because she was still of child-bearing age. (The average female has had her last child by the age of 43, which means she could have had children as late as 1710.)

Some allege Martha is the daughter of William BROWNE & Elizabeth MULFORD, but their daughter had married John CARTER by 1699before the birth of James in 1702 — and she died as John CARTER'S wife in 1718.  Even if the birth of James wasn't an issue, John TAPPAN didn't die until 1723, so Martha would have had to divorce him in order to marry John CARTER by 1699.
Marriage-2:  2 Dec 1717, Salisbury, Essex Co., MA
Wife-2:  Ruth __
Other Spouse:  Mr. HERD / HEARD

The "b" indicates the birth date of a child as an indication that the marriage took place before this time.  The locations are known residences of the husband, ending with the husband's place of death.  An entry in Torrey does not imply a marriage in New England; it only demonstrates the presence of a married couple there before 1700.  Torrey is a compilation of published sources, not primary records, so he should be considered a secondary source.
