James's age was initially left blank, then someone later, in a paler ink and at an odd angle, wrote in what may be "30" — and James is indexed as being age 30.  In the 1870 census, the only James STROUP in Mifflin County is our subject's son, and in the 1880 census, the above James is the only James STROUP in Mifflin County, so I'm inclined to think this "added" age is wrong and that this is our subject's son.  Not to mention that our subject's son, James, did survive (see his page), so had to be somewhere.
