Children — who appear to have been orphaned at an early age: |
George, Belle, and Anna are said to be siblings. They are also said
to be related to the brewing family of John
N. STRAUB, immigrant from Alsace-Lorraine, but if so, they would have
to be John's orphaned nieces and nephews, not his children, because John's
children are with him in the 1850 and 1860 censuses. No brother of
John is known to have immigrated with him, and I do not find these children
in the 1850 or 1860 censuses though, if orphaned (or if their widowed mother
had remarried), they may have been enumerated under their stepfather's surname.
. George STRAUB . Belle STRAUB . Anna Elizabetha / Elizabeth "Annie" STRAUB, b. Mar 1851, PA |
Anna: I first find her in the 1870 census, where she shows up as Anna STRAUB in the household of Joseph & Margaret FISHER (immigrants from Alsace-Lorraine). She lived in Allegheny City [now Pittsburgh], PA; her husband is said to have died in Wheeling, WV. |
. Louis C. STRAUB, b. Aug 1852, VA [now WV] |
Louis: I first find Louis in the 1880 census, where he is unmarried and living in Bellaire, Belmont Co., OH. In 1883, he marries Ella CLARK of Bellaire and moves to Detroit where he passed away between the 1910 and 1920 censuses. He consistently gave his birthplace as WV; he gave his parents' birthplace as Alsace or Germany. Louis is included here based on some thin circumstantial evidence, primarily geography, occupation, and a distant marriage. In the 1860 census of Bellaire, Ella CLARK's family lived just three households from William PRACHT, of the PRACHT family of bakers and confectioners from Germany. William PRACHT's nephew, August PRACHT, married Emma FAUST, daughter of the above Anna (STRAUB) FAUST. |

Alsace is an ethnic German enclave in France that was at times under German rule; it's ethnic German inhabitants would have spoken German and thought of themselves as German, not French. |

Everything I have is online at this web site. I have no further information, so please don't write asking me if I do.
On the other hand, if you feel I've made an error, please don't hesitate to notify me, but in which case, There are over 18,000 pages on this web site, and I simply don't remember every page, much less every person on every page. |
