John STRAUB
Margaret __?__
Husband:  John STRAUB, Sr.
Birth:  Oct 1849, Austro-Hungarian Empire
Occupation:  blacksmith
Migration(?):  1881, Europe to America
Parents:  born in Europe

The boundary history of Europe is exceedingly complex.  Our subject and his children have given Bohemia, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Austria, and Germany as their origin, so it appears they were from some part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, which in the mid-19th Century encompassed Austria, Hungary, Czechoslovakia (Bohemian and Moravia), and other regions.  The inconsistencies do make you wonder just where in the Empire they were actually from!

Marriage:  1873/4
Migration(?):  1884, Europe to America
Wife:  Margaret "Maggie" __?__
Birth:  Oct 1852, Europe
Occupation:  homemaker
Migration(?):  1882 (w/children), Europe to America
Parents:  born in Europe
Children:
— born in Austro-Hungarian Empire:
1.  Philip Felix STRAUB, b. Aug 1878
2.  Thecla STRAUB, b. Jun 1879

— born in PA, presumably in Jefferson Twp., Allegheny Co., PA:
3.  John STRAUB, Jr., b. May 1883
4.  Margaret R. "Maggie" STRAUB, b. Apr 1891
5.  Carl S. STRAUB, b. Jul 1895
6.  Bernard G. STRAUB, b. Jul 1898

Thecla is a variation of Thekla, which is short for the Greek name, Theokleia.

Why is Bernard last and not Charles?  Maggie is rather old to have a son one year old.  Could Bernard be adopted?

I'm inclined to believe the immigration dates in the 1900 census, but maybe these are the correct ones.  Listed next to son, John STRAUB, Jr., on one side; and, in the other directtion, four households from son, Philip Felix STRAUB.

The enumerator had initially written "Pa" in the cell, then wrote something over it, which I can' read.
