Edwin C. SHERMAN
Sarah A. __?__
Harriet CLISSOLD
WARNING:  there is a question as to whether Edwin had one wife or two.  If the birth records for Sarah and Frank are correct, their mother was "Sarah A."; however, a descendant of our subject says Edwin had just one wife, Harriet CLISSOLD, and that all the children, including George, are hers.
Husband:  Edwin C. SHEARMAN / SHERMAN
Birth:  11 May 1829, Leonard Stanley, Stroud Dist., GLS
Baptism:  1 Jun 1831, Dursley Chapel, Dursley, Stroud Dist., GLS
Death:  9 Jan 1897, Wales, Hampden Co., MA
Occupation:  weaver; worker in woolen mill
Father:  John SHEARMAN
Mother:  Maria BASSETT
Marriage-1:
Wife-1:  Sarah A. __?__
Marriage-2:
Migration:  said to have arrived ca. 14 Jun 1858 in New York, NY
Wife-2:  Harriet CLISSOLD
Birth:  6 Feb 1834, Minchinhampton, Stroud Dist., GLS
Death:  6 Jan 1907, Palmer, Hampden Co., MA
Occupation:  homemaker
Other Spouse:  m2. 1898/9, Eli Jackson GARDNER, b. Jan 1836, MA
Sister:  Ellen CLISSOLD, b. 1841/2, Minchinhampton, Stroud Dist., GLS
Father:  Richard CLISSOLD (1803- )
Mother:  Sara / Sarah BIRD, b. 1803/4, Minchinhampton, Stroud Dist., GLS
Adopted? child:
1.  George SHERMAN, b. 1856/7, PA; d. 21 Aug 1882 (of consumption)

If Edwin didn't immigrate to the United States until 1858, then George would not appear to be his biological son.  It is said George's death certificate names Edwin & Harriet as his parents, but that would be likely even if George was adopted.  It's unfortunate that I can't find them in the 1860 census.  If George was adopted, there may be court records of the adoption or guardianship.

Children with Sarah — born in Willington, Tolland Co., CT:
2.  Sarah D. SHERMAN, b. 21 Jan 1863; died in infancy
3.  Francis "Frank" Edwin SHERMAN, b. 21 Aug 1865
4.  Fredrick / Frederic / Frederick C. SHERMAN, b. Jul 1866; d. 9 Aug 1943, Palmer, Hampden Co., MA
Child with Harriet CLISSOLD:
5.  Minnie Josephine SHERMAN, b. 14 Apr 1874, Stafford Springs, Tolland Co., CT; d. 27 Mar 1875, Wales, Hampden Co., MA

Based on the 1900 census, Harriet had 6 children, with only two surviving as of the 1900 census.

12.  WorldConnect / Ancestry World Trees (online at RootsWeb.com/Ancestry.com).  A file there is citing "Willington VR [vital records]" for the identity, birthdates, and parents of children Sarah and Frank.  If their mother truly is "Sarah A.," then Harriet must be his second wife.  So, is George a child of Harriet's from a prior marriage or Edwin's?

13m.  Email from Dianne BELL.  Says Edwin had only one wife, Harriet CRISSOLD, that they married in England and came to the U.S., together, in 1858, and that George's death certificate names Edwin & Harriet as his parents.
