Some secondary sources show her as the daughter of Walter Bedford STROUP & Nancy Jane COOPER. Walter Bedford appears to actually be Walter Balfour STROUP, but he did not marry Nancy Jane COOPER. Nancy married John D. BAYES in 1850, and stayed married to him until he died in 1911; they never set foot outside Kentucky. Walter Balfour STROUP never set foot inside Kentucky or Virginia, neither of his two wives was named Nancy, and he had no daughter, Mary. The connection of Mary Jane to these people is so obviously false, the only thing I can figure is that the couple was concocted to obscure the fact that Mary Jane is apparently the daughter of an unwed mother.
