Sources (n.b., Lauderdale and Limestone Cos. were formed 6 Feb 1818; Alabama became a state in Dec 1819):

1.  Lauderdale County [Alabama] Court.  Inventory Book A-1 (online at the Lauderdale Co. ALGenWeb site).  First marriage in the book:
ROSE, Bennet - BURNEY, Nancy 30 Dec 1818 (7 Jan 1818) Z. Tate JP
If the license was obtained in Dec of 1818 and the marriage ceremony was performed in January, they had to have been married in 1819, not 1818.  This marriage bond was encased in plastic to preserve it and, according to Parham (1998: 163), there is reason to believe the "1" in "17" was trimmed off the edge, giving a false date of 7 Jan.  In a certified copy of the marriage record that was produced in 1855 as part of a bounty land application, the marriage date is, indeed, given as 17 Jan 1819.
