In all three censuses, our subject was enumerated as George ROBERTS, so… Was he ever in his lifetime really called ROBARDS?  His son, John, was ROBERTS in the 1850, 1860, and 1870 censuses, then became ROBARDS in the 1880 census.

3.  1820 Census Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com; Image #3 of 21; extracted by Diana Gale Matthiesen):
1820 NY Onondaga Co. Camillus Roll M33_67 p. 135/261 Ln. 11 George Roberts 200010-01010-0-001
These data indicate:
No. & Sex  Age Class Therefore Born Individuals Inferred
2 males 9 or under 1810-1820 = George Thompson (b. 1817)
= Son A
1 male 26-44 1775-1794 = George (b. 1794?)
1 female 10-15 1804-1810 = ?
1 female 26-44 1775-1794 = Temperance (b. 1794)
1 person engaged in agriculture
The girl is too old to be their daughter.  Listed four lines below Temperance's first cousin, John MONRO (111410-32010-0-500), who is two lines below John's father, Squire MONRO (000101-00101-0-200).  Given the numbers and the proximity to Temperance's kin, I'm assuming this George ROBERTS/ROBARDS is our subject.  There are no George ROBARDS/ROBERTS/etc. in Michigan Territory.  There are five George ROBERTS (one mis-indexed ROBERT) in New York State:  one in Sempronius, Cayuga Co. (200010-10101-0-001); one in Gorham, Ontario Co. (100010-20010-0-100); one in Avon, Ontario Co. (200010-01100-0-000); one in Otsego, Otsego Co. (020301-00211-0-500); and the one in Camillus, Onondaga Co. given above.  I may have erred in accepting the one in Camillus, but he is the only one in proximity to the MONROs.

4.  1830 Census Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com, Image #7 of 10; extracted by Diana Gale Matthiesen):
1830 Michigan Territory Washtenaw Co. Dexter Roll 69 p. 162 Ln. 24 George Roberts 101 100 100 - 121 001
These data indicate:
No. & Sex  Age Class Therefore Born Individuals Inferred
1 male 4 or under 1825-1830 = John (b. 1829)
1 male 10-14 1815-1820 = George Thompson (b. 1817)
1 male 15-19 1810-1815 = Son A
1 male 40-49 1780-1790 = George (b. 1794?)
1 female 4 or under 1825-1830 = Daughter A
2 females 5-9 1820-1825 = Dorleska (b. 1824)
= Mary Jane (b. 1822)
1 female 10-14 1815-1820 = ?
1 female 30-39 1790-1800 = Temperance (b. 1794)
Either George was tallied in the wrong age class, or the 1794 birthyear for him is incorrect.  The girl born 1815-20 was not in their household in 1820, so apparently she is not their daughter.

5.  1840 Census Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com, Image #1 of 8; extracted by Diana Gale Matthiesen):
1840 MI Hillsdale Co. Litchfield Twp. Roll 205 pp. 37B-38A Ln. 6 George Roberts 011 020 010 - 011 200 100 0/10/00000
These data indicate:
No. & Sex Age Class Therefore Born Individuals Inferred
1 male 5-9 1830-1835 = James (b. 1831)
1 male 10-14 1825-1830 = John (b. 1829)
2 males 20-29 1810-1820 = George (b. 1817)
= Son A
1 male 50-59 1780-1790 = George (b. 1794?)
1 female 5-9 1830-1835 = Daughter B
1 female 10-14 1825-1830 = Daughter A
2 females 15-19 1820-1825 = Dorleska (b. 1824)
= Mary Jane (b. 1822)
1 female 40-49 1790-1800 = Temperance (b. 1794)
10 persons employed in agriculture
Either George was tallied in the wrong age class, or the 1794 birthyear for him is incorrect.  Listed two lines below Selah MURRAY, whose son later married their daughter, Mary Jane, and five lines below Harry EGGLESTON.  (This enumerator did not know how to use the "Employment" columns correctly because he had all the members of nearly every family "engaged in agriculture.")
