The average span of fecundity for a woman is 23 years, from age 20 to 43.  It would be extraordinary for Melinda to have had a child at the age of 50.  Note also the ten year gap between the birth of Elenora and the birth of Alice, another indication that Melinda had stopped having children at the "normal" age of 40.  The possibility that she is Melinda's granddaughter or an adopted child needs to be considered.

Melinda has shaved a few years off her age making it even less likely that she is actually Alice's biological mother.
