1.  Interview of Nina Gale (STRAUB) MATTHIESEN, subject's niece (and my mother), who lived with subject's sister, Josephine (STRAUB) PETERS, in Washington, DC, while attending art school there in the 1930s.  Family tradition has Besse working as private secretary to President Herbert Hoover, but this appears to have been just that, a legend, because while Besse lived in Washington, DC, and worked in the State Department, she does not appear to have beem President HOOVER's secretary (see next source).  Also, I contacted the Herbert Hoover Library, and they said they have no record of her being his secretary.

Listed four households from Zoa M. (STRAUB) HOKE, whose mother was Eliza Ann OSBORN, wife of Bessie's uncle, John J. STRAUB.  It appears as though one of Eliza's OSBORN kin adopted Bessie when Bessie's mother died (in 1888), and that she has since been adopted by the MOYERs.
