2.  1850 Census Every-Name-Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com, Image #64 of 77):  District No. 1, Carter Co., KY, Roll M432_195, p. 279B, enumerated 4 Sep 1850, official enumeration date 1 Jun 1850 (extracted by Diana Gale Matthiesen):
1850:  for an explanation of the column headings, please see
What the Numbers in the Federal Census Mean (missing columns contained no data).

424 424 John B Matney 19 M W Farmer 100 Va /
    Eliza J  " 15 F W     Ohio /
We can't be certain this is our subject, but it is highly likely (Carter Co., KY, is only two counties away from Lawrence Co., OH).  This couple is not found in the 1860 census, in KY or anywhere else.

3.  1860 Census Every-Name-Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com, Image #12 of 21):  Rock Camp P.O., Lawrence Twp., Lawrence Co., OH, Roll M653_997, p. 42B, PN 84, 566/559, enumerated 28 Jun 1860, official enumeration date 1 Jun 1860 (extracted by Diana Gale Matthiesen):
John B Matney 29 M   Farmer 1500 350 Va

Wm        "  5 M         O
Sarah J   "  3 F         O
Mary L    " 1/12 F         O
Joel      "  8 M         O
The fact that Joel is placed last, after the younger children, usually signifies the child is that of a former wife.

4.  1870 Census Every-Name-Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com, Image #23 of 32):  Aid P.O., Lawrence Twp., Lawrence Co., OH, Roll M593_1231, p. 420A, PN 23, 167/149, enumerated 28 Jul 1870, official enumeration date 1 Jun 1870 (extracted by Diana Gale Matthiesen):

Again, listing the older children last indicates they're of a prior wife, in this case, wives.
