One of these dates must be wrong.  This is a late first marriage for Robert.  There is a possibility that he had an earlier wife.

1.  Census Index:  U.S. Selected Counties, 1820 (Broderbund CD-314):  there are numerous MARSHALLs in Washington Co., PA, including three Roberts, but given our subject's age, it is doubtful that he is one of them.  MARSHALLs in Canton Twp. were:  Jacob, Robert, and Samuel.

Census Index:  U.S. Selected Counties, 1830 (Broderbund CD-315):
1830 Marshall, Robert PA Washington Co. Canton Twp. p. 196
There are several MARSHALL households in Washington Co., PA, but only one Robert MARSHALL, and he is in Canton Twp.  The one other MARSHALL in Canton Twp. was Jacob.  Given Robert's age, he is old enough to have had a wife prior to Nancy, but it seems likely that the Robert MARSHALL in Canton Twp. in 1830 was the one there in 1820, which means he is probably not our subject.  Perhaps our subject did marry late.  The numerical data would help.

6.  Email from "Carolyn (Marshall) Lewis" (7 May 2001).
We have a letter written by Harriet (our Robert & Nancy's oldest child) in 1895 (our Nancy Ely/Ealy was still alive in 1895).  In this letter Harriet states that Nancy (her mother) said that her mother's name was Amia Post, was of "yanky decent" and died in her 91st year and her father was of "dutch decent" and died at the age of 80.  This letter also lists all of their children (one of which, LeGrand Marshall is my great grandfather).
