"Macadam" (pronounced, ma-CAD-um) isn't the name of the road, it's a kind of road where asphalt is used in combination with compacted layers of gravel to produce a pavement (see entry at Wikipedia); also called "blacktop" or "tarmac." At the time, this would have been a great advance over dirt roads.
