James Lane 65 M   Farmer 10,000 Penna
Eleanor " 40 F       "

Sarah   "  6 F       "
John    "  4 M       "
Mary Hamilton 40 F       "
Secondary sources have interpreted this record as James being a widower and Eleanor his daughter, but clearly she is his wife.  Note that here, in this record, there are children born after 1840, and note also that, in the 1840 census, Martha is no longer living (there is no woman in her 50s in the household).  And even if Martha had been living in the 1840s, she would have been much too old in the 1840s to bear any children.  Unquestionably, Martha died and James remarried some time between 1830 and 1840, and the Eleanor in the 1850 census is his wife, not his daughter.
