2.  1850 Census Every-Name-Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com; Image #7 of 20):  Platt Twp., Clay Co., MO, Roll M432_396, p. 351B, 732/732, enumerated 28 Sep 1850, official enumeration date 1 Jun 1850 (extracted by Diana Gale Matthiesen):

Some say Robert died 18 Aug 1850 and others say he died 19 Aug 1851.  Although the census was enumerated on 28 Sep 1850, which would seem to rule out the earlier date, the official enumeration date was 1 Jun 1850, so if Robert was alive on that date, he would be shown in the census.  The later date is still more probable because it would have been a very fast trip to make it to California that fast.
