Colonel William Ball married in London 2 July, 1638, Hannah Atherall; by whom he had three sons, Richard, William and Joseph, and a daughter, Hannah... Richard Ball, eldest son of Colonel William Ball, settled on Patapsco River in Baltimore County, Maryland, in 1660. His warrant for the 500 acres was renewed 15 May, 1661, returnable December following. (Land Office, Liber 4, folio 554.) That he was one of the leading figures in his community is evident from the fact that as early as 4 July, 1665, he was commissioned a Justice of the Peace. He married about March, 1661/2, Mary, daughter of Hugh Kensey [or Kinsey], of Anne Arundel County, Maryland, and widow of Thomas Humphrey who in his will recorded in Lancaster County, Virginia, devised "East Humphreys," 300 acres of land on Patapsco River, Baltimore County, Maryland, to his wife, Mary Humphrey.  Under date of 1 March, 1661/2, Mary Humphrey, "now in widowhood," conveys the land by deed of gift to her daughter, Mary Humphrey.  The deed is recorded by "Mr. Richard Ball, husband of Mary Humphreys."6 6Maryland Historical Magazine, Vol. 24, page 155; Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, Vol. 7, page 440, and Vol. 8, page 82.

"Hancock Ball" is Hannah BALL, the daughter of Mary (KINSEY) HUMPHREYS BALL.

Mary HUMPHREYS, as referred to here, must mean Hugh's granddaughter, the daughter of Thomas & Mary (KINSEY) HUMPHREYS.  Mary HUMPHREYS, "Jr.," never married, so without a husband, would have had special need for the bequest, which may be the reason she was favored in this way.  When Mary HUMPHREYS, Jr., died, her parents and Hannah BALL's parents were already deceased.  The BALL family took legal action to have Mary's estate fall to her half-sister, Hannah BALL, rather than back to the KINSEY heirs.  They succeeded.
