As far as we know, the father of James, Walter, and Minnie was born in Tennessee, not North Carolina.  In the 1870 census, Minnie was born in SC, like all her other siblings, except Walter.  It's not unusual for orphaned children to be mistaken about their own or their parents' birthplaces.
