Daniel HOLSAPPLE
Christina STRAUB
Lizzie RUMMEL
WARNING:  this page is based on a file at WorldConnect, but I'm unable to find support for it with primary records.  Specifically, I've found neither marriage record (which, granted, doesn't mean someone else hasn't found them), but more importantly, the two children born in the 1870s and attributed to Daniel are not with him in the 1880 census, among other problems.  So… just what records were used to connect the individuals on this page?
Husband:  Daniel HOLSAPPLE / HOLSOPPLE / HOLTZAPPLE / HOLTZAPFEL
Birth:  29 Aug 1852, PA
Death:  ca. 30 Jan 1895
Disposition:  buried Berkey Brethren Cemetery, Paint Twp., Somerset Co., PA
Father:  Isaac HOLSAPPLE (1800-1883)
Mother:  Christina HOFFMAN (1806-1878)
Marriage-1:
Wife-1:  Christina / Christena STRAUB
Birth:  1852/3, Paint Twp., Somerset Co., PA
Death:  1871-77, presumably in Paint Twp., Somerset Co., PA
Disposition:  buried Mount Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Paint Twp., Somerset Co., PA
Father:  Jacob STRAUB
Mother:  Margaret __?__
Marriage-2:
Wife-2:  "Lizzie" __?__ or Anne Catharina Elisabetha "Lizzie" RUMMEL
Birth (source WorldConnect):  22 Dec 1848
Birth (calculated from tombstone):  ca. 19 Nov 1847
Death:  10 Mar 1911
Disposition:  buried Berkey Brethren Cemetery, Paint Twp., Somerset Co., PA
Father:  Joseph RUMMEL (c1810s-1886)
Mother:  Maria MEYER (c1818/22-1860s/70s)

Joseph & Maria's daughter is "Elisabeth A." in 1850 and "Catharine" in 1860; I can't find her in 1870.  Daniel's wife is "Lizzie" in 1880, and I can't find her in 1900 or 1910.  If these women really are one person, it's likely her name was, in typical German fashion, something like, "Anna Catharina Elisabetha," or some other combination of the three given names.  Or… is the Lizzie in the 1880 census really surnamed RUMMEL?  If the 22 Dec 1848 birthdate of Joseph & Maria's daughter is correct and if the tombstone in the Berkey Cemetery is correct, then the woman who died 10 Mar 1911 is not Joseph & Maria's daughter.

Child with Elisabeth RUMMER — born in Paint Twp., Somerset Co., PA:

1.  Marriage Record:

2.  1850 Census Every-Name-Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com):  Daniel HOLSAPPLE and Christina STRAUB are not yet born.  Elisabeth A. RUMMEL (æ 2, b. PA) is living in Paint Twp., Somerset Co., PA (p. 76A), with her parents, Joseph RUMMEL (æ 35, b. PA) and Maria (æ 28, b. PA).

3.  1860 Census Every-Name-Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com):  Daniel HOLSAPPLE (æ 8, b. PA) is living in Paint Twp., Somerset Co., PA (p. 356), with his parents, Isaac HOLSAPPLE (æ 60, b. PA) and Christena (æ 54, b. PA).  Christina STRAUB (æ 7, b. PA) is living in Paint Twp., Somerset Co., PA, with her parents (q.v.).  Catharine RUMMEL (æ 12, b. PA) is living in Paint Twp., Somerset Co., PA (p. 367), with her parents Joseph RUMMEL (æ 46, b. PA) and Maria (æ 42, b. PA).

3.  1870 Census Every-Name-Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com):  Daniel HOLSAPBLE (æ 18, b. PA) is living in Paint Twp., Somerset Co., PA (p. 426A, 114/110), with his parents, Isaac HOLSAPBLE (æ 68, b. PA) and Christina (æ 64, b. PA).  Christina STRAUB and her parents not found, nor do I find Christina's married brother.  I do find Joseph & Maria (MEYER) RUMMEL, but no daughter Lizzie/etc. (or even one Lizzie's age) is living with them, nor do I find her living elsewhere.  It appears likely that part of Paint Twp. was skipped by the enumerator (or the pages were later lost).

There are only two William HOLSAPPLE/HOLSOPPLEs in all of Pennsylvania, and both are the right age and birthplace to be our subject:  one is a married man with three children in Snyder Co., PA, and the other is the above single man in Somerset Co., PA, who is living with Sylvester N. HOLSOPPLE (æ 32, b. PA) and wife Amanda (CUSTER) HOLSAPPLE.

10.  Joseph Berkey Graveyard, Paint Twp., Somerset Co., PA (online in the Somerset County PAGenWeb archives; contributed by Rosemary Miller):
HOLSOPPLE Daniel S  b 2-19-1871  d 8-29-1910.
HOLSOPPLE Daniel  d 1-30-1895 ag 42-5-1.
HOLSOPPLE Elizabeth wife  d 3-10-1911 ag 63-3-19.
HOLSOPPLE Wm.  b 12-25-1877  d 2-20-1938...
There are numerous other HOLSOPPLEs listed in the cemeter, with nothing given in the file to indicate why these four should be connected as parents and children.

11.  Birthdate calculated using Ben Buckner's Birthdate Calculator.
Name Deathdate Age at Death Result
Daniel HOLSOPPLE 30 Jan 1895 01d 05m 42y 29 Aug 1852
Elizabeth HOLSOPPLE 10 Mar 1911 19d 03m 63y 19 Nov 1847
(Calculated birthdates should always be prefaced with "ca." — you can't be certain the person who calculated their age did it correctly.)

12.  Messages posted to the HOLSAPPLE Surname Board (online at Ancestry/com/RootsWeb.com), including one that cites Closson (1984), "Index to Somerset Co., PA Wills, 1795-1900)," as listing a will for Daniel HOLSAPPLE dated 1895.  Was it the will that connected these individuals?  If so, why is the census so screwed up?
