8. Robert G. Fisher (of San Jose, CA). nd. Rancho
del Refugio de la Laguna Seca and the Captain William Fisher Family
(submitted by Jeanne Rudy and online at the Somos Primos web site).
Excellent compilation and certainly the best currently on the web.
Includes this excerpt:
In April 1862, the Burnett Post Office was established inside the
12 Mile House, which was a store, hotel and blacksmith shop. This
building was destroyed by fire in 1963; but long before that, the post
office was moved and a new, small structure was built by Fiacro C. Fisher,
Postmaster, in 1907, next door to the 12 Mile House. There, the Coyote
Post Office operated without a break until 1974, even though in 1935 Washington,
D.C., had forgotten where it was and had to be told. In 1974, the
building built by Fiacro was moved to the San Jose Historical Museum in
San Jose. |
My grandfather, Albert
Roy STRAUB, was Postmaster of the Coyote Post Office from some time
before 1920 to 1928. Albert Roy's brother, William
Barton STRAUB, married Fiacro's daughter, Laura Estella FISHER.

F. Fisher. The subject of this
sketch, whose portrait appears in this work,
is the youngest son of
William and Liberta Cesaña Fisher
(who were among the very earliest [European] settlers in California) and
was born in Burnett township, Santa Clara county, August 30, 1850, where
he has continuously resided save during the years he attended school.
In 1861 he entered the Santa Clara College, and was otherwise educated
in the public school of San José. In 1868 he returned to Burnett
and commenced working on the farm of Dan. Murphy; in 1872 he moved
on to the ranch which he now occupies, and which he has owned since 1859.
It comprises three thousand seven hundred acres adapted to agriculture
and stock-raising. Married, in San José April 8, 1872,
Gertrude
Hanks, a native of California, by whom he has: Robert D., born
December 20, 1872;
Laura and Chester. |
No such portrait exists in the book, nor is one named in the List of Portraits.
Santa Clara College is now Santa Clara University, a private Jesuit university
founded in 1851, the oldest institution of higher learning in California.

FIACRO JULIAN FISHER.The Fisher family
have been identified with the Santa Clara Valley since early pioneer days,
and Fiacro Julian Fisher was born October 4, 1891, in the beautiful
modern residence his father had erected on the exact location of the adobe
house which his grandfather put up in the pioneer days of the state.
The father, Fiacro C. Fisher, was born upon the farm in Burnett
township, Santa Clara County, August 30, 1850, the youngest son of William
and Liberata (Cesena) Fisher, early settlers of California...
Fiacro C. Fisher received his preliminary education in the
public schools of Santa Clara County, after which he entered and attended
Santa Clara College for two years, as well as the high school at San Jose
for awhile. He left school quite early to take up his chosen occupation,
and that to which he had early been trained, being foreman for Dan Murphy
until 1872. He then engaged in Ranching or himself on the old homestead,
giviing considerable attention to stockraising. In 1877 he went to
Nevada to take charge of the ranches of Mr. Murphy and Mr. Hill,
remaining in their employ as general manager until 1894. Since that
time he turned his entire attention to the cultivation and improvement
of his own property, which consisted of 300 acres located on the Monterey
and Coyote roads, and 1,000 acres in valley land. In 1872, in San
Jose, Mr. Fisher was married to Gertrude Hanks, a native
of Califor- |

nia and daughter of Wm. Hanks, better
known as Julian Hanks. The latter was born in Massachusetts,
but migrated to Lower California, where he was interested in a vessel.
In 1846 he came to Callifornia with the elder Fisher, and in San
Jose conducted a grist mill, operating the same until 1866, when he traded
it for property in Sonora, Mexico. He made his home in Lower California
until his death. Mr. and Mrs. Fisher were the parents of six
children: Laura, the wife of William Straub; Chester F.,
Neva,
Gertrude,
George,
and Fiacro Julian. Both parents have passed away... |

14. Natural Diversity of Motorcycle County Park (online
at the County of Santa Clara, California, web site [link died]).
Due to copyright restrictions, I have had to paraphrase at least some of
the following extraction (see web site for full account):
Much of the Motercycle County Park on the Coyote River in southeastern
Santa Clara County, California consists of land that was once part of
a roughly 20,000 acre land grant called Rancho Laguna Seca, awarded to
Juan ALVIREZ in 1834 by Governor FIGUEROA, when the State of California
was still Alta California, México. In April of 1842, Rancho
Laguna Seca was purchased at public auction by William FISHER for $6000. |
"One of Willam's sons, Fiacro C. Fisher, born on the ranch in 1850,
continued ranching on the 2,600 acre farm while caring for his mother.
By 1876, much of the ranch was parcelized, with the Fishers retaining most
of the northern portion of the original rancho around Coyote Station including
the original homestead. The ranch was reported to be one of the most
productive grain farms in the valley. Most of the ranch was devoted
to hay, grain and pasture...
"Fiacro Fisher received his primary education at local County schools
and attended Santa Clara University for two years. After school,
he worked as a foreman for Daniel Murphy, another pioneer of Santa Clara
County, who owned much land in and around Morgan Hill and Gilroy.
Fiacro also ran the family ranch while, in 1877, taking charge of the Hill
and Murphy ranches in Nevada as General Manager until 1894. After
1894, he turned to cultivating and improving the Fisher Ranch (Coyote Ranch)
property consisting of about 1,300 acres. Fiacro built the Coyote
Ranch house which is located on Coyote Ranch Road on County park property,
currently leased for catered group picnics." |
