Peter CUPP
Ms. __?__
Elizabeth SHAFFER
Husband:  Peter CUPP
Birth:  11 Dec 1800, PA
Death:  3 Jan 1866, Marion Co., OH
Disposition:  buried Kirkpatrick Cemetery, Scott Twp., Marion Co., OH
Father probablyConrad CUPP
Mother probablyElizabeth KRONINGER
Marriage-1:  bef. 1822
Wife-1:  Ms. __?__
Marriage-2:  1 Jul 1827, Marion Co., OH
Wife-2:  Elizabeth SHAFFER / SHAFER / SHAVER / SHAEFFER / SCHAEFFER
Birth:  1810 or Sep 1812 or 1815, most likely 1810, OH
Death:  aft. 1870
Father:  William T. SHAFFER
Mother:  Sarah "Sallie" DeWITT
Child with Wife-1:
1.  Sarah Ann CUPP, b. ca. 10 Jun 1822, Marion Co., OH
Children with Elizabeth SHAFFER:
— born in Claridon Twp., Marion Co., OH, or Canaan Twp., Morrow Co., OH:
2.  Mary Ann CUPP, b. 10 Sep 1831; m. Amos McMULLAN
3.  Eliza CUPP, b. 6 Sep 1833
4.  Angeline CUPP, b. 19 Jan 1835
5.  Lamont CUPP, b. 25 Dec 1838

— born in Canaan Twp., Morrow Co., OH:
6.  Joseph V. CUPP, b. 1842/3

Lamont's death certificate gives his mother as Elizabeth DUNKELBERGER.  This has to be an error because his parents' marriage certificate shows he married Elizabeth SHAVER [SHAFFER].  The death certificates of two of Lamont's older sisters (viz., Eliza and Mary Ann) show Elizabeth SHAFER as their mother.  Death certificates are notorious for containing errors (please see this page), and a marriage certificate trumps one.  The other possibility is that Peter remarried, to Elizabeth DUNKELBERGER, after the births of Eliza and Mary Ann, but before the birth of Lamont.  I have not found such a marriage record.  The death certificate of Joseph should help determine which is the case.

Relationship Uncertain:
7.  Melissa CUPP, b. 1851/2; d. 23 Oct 1864
8.  Franklin CUPP, b. 1853/4
9.  Nancy CUPP, b. 1857/8

Elizabeth may have been old enough to have mothered Melissa and Franklin, but she was only old enough to have been the mother of Nancy if she was born in 1815, not 1810.  The death certificates of these children should be sought, as well.

1 male 20-29 1800-1810 = Peter (b. 1800/1/2)

Where's Sarah?  Was Sarah raised by her maternal grandparents, after her mother died?

1 male 4 or under 1835-1840 = Lamont (b. 1838)

1 female 30-39 1800-1810 = Elizabeth (b. 1810/15)

Still no Sarah.  She obviously chose not to live with her father — or perhaps it was her stepmother she was avoiding.

4.  1850 Census Every-Name-Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com, Image #9 of 30 — indexed "Cap"):  Canaan Twp., Morrow Co., OH, Roll M432_716, p. 367A, 255/257, enumerated 23 Jul 1850, official enumeration date 1 Jun 1850 (extracted by Diana Gale Matthiesen):
Peter Cup 45 M   Farmer   Pa
Elizabeth Cup 35 F       O
Mary A Cup 18 F       "
Eliza Cup 16 F       "
Angeline Cup 15 F       "
William Cup 13 M       "
Lamont Cup 10 M       "
Joseph V Cup  8 M       "
Elizabeth's age is clearly enumerated as 35, but this age is not in synch with the 1840, 1860, and 1870 censuses, which would make her age in 1850 as 39 or 40.

5.  1860 Census Images (online at Ancestry.com; Image #10 of 36):  Marion P.O., Richland Twp., Marion Co., OH, p. 386B, 335/327, enumerated 20 Jun 1860 (extracted by Diana Gale Matthiesen):¤

Elizabeth " 49 f       Ohio
Angeline  " 23 f       Do
Lamont    " 19 m Farm laborer     Do
Joseph    " 17 m Do     Do
Melissa   "  8 f       Do
Franklin  "  6 m       Do
Nancy     "  2 f       Do
Elizabeth's age is clearly enumerated 49, and if she is really 49, not 45, she is definitely too old to be the mother of Nancy, and almost too old to the mother of Melissa and Franklin.  The nine-year gap between Melissa and Joseph suggests Joseph really is her youngest child, so are these three adopted?  Or is just Nancy adopted?  Or is Nancy a grandchild (e.g., the illegitimate daughter of Angeline)?  Listed next to daughter, Sarah Ann (CUPP) CREASAP, who is listed four households from Peter's presumed sister, Julia (CUPP) DUNKLEBARGER
