John's parents were in the 1820/30/40/50/60 censuses of Rockingham Co.,
so surely John was born in Rockingham Co., not Augusta Co.

3.  1860 Census Images (online at Ancestry.com; Image #393 of 578):  Burke's Mill P.O., North Sub-Division, Augusta Co., VA, p. 918, PN 106, 699/704, enumerated 25 Jul 1860 (extracted by Diana Gale Matthiesen):
John Cupp 31 M   Farmer 3800 1664 Virginia
Lydia  " 28 F         "
F V    " 10 M         "
M L    "  7 M         "
E M S  " 7/12 F         "
J C Cupp 16 M   F Laborer     "
E Rawley 72 F        200 Pa
This enumerator's initials were very hard to decipher; I cannot confidently distinguish "L" from "S."  E. RAWLEY is almost certainly Lydia's mother.

4.  1870 Census Images (online at Ancestry.com; Image #485-486 of 739):  Mount Sidney P.O., 3rd District, Augusta Co., VA, p. 364A, PN 31, 211/213, enumerated 3-4 Aug 1870 (extracted by Diana Gale Matthiesen):
Cupp John 47 M W Farmer 2200 500 Virginia
____ Lydia 38 F W Keeping House     Virginia
____ Frederic V 19 M W Farm Labourer     Virginia
____ Martin L 16 M W Farm Laborer     Virginia

____ Ellen F  7 F W       Virginia
____ John S  4 M W       Virginia

Cupp William R  1 M W       Virginia
Rauley Elizabeth 82 F W no occupation     Pennsylvania
Elizabeth RAWLEY is almost certainly Lydia's mother.

The middle initials are difficult to decipher.  I agree with the IGI that Martin's is "L" and Ellen's is "F."  We all three agree that John's is "S."  I agree with the LDS that George's is "E."  I'm uncertain about Daniel's, but it looks more like "L" than "T."
