Ira Gilbert CORBIN
Amanda Catherine GAITHER
PLEASE NOTE:  this family group sheet has been difficult to assemble, in part because Amanda was calling herself a widow in the 1910 census when, in fact, she and her husband had merely split up, and in part because it wasn't initially apparent that Ira CORBIN and Gilbert CORBIN were the same person.  There is more work to be done here, but I believe I've managed to assemble this broken family correctly.  Any help appreciated, especially and obviously, the parentage of our subject.  And, as always, if you feel I've made an error, please don't hesitate to correct me.

Sixteen?!  Mandy was 30.  Her age must be enumerator error, just as Archie's birth locations must have been.

5b.  1900 Census Every-Name-Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com):  Maude E. GAITHER (æ 13, b. Apr 1887, WV) is living in Martinsburg, Berkeley Co., WV (p. 160A), with her father, George W. GAITHER (æ 55, b. Oct 1844, WV), and his (second?) wife, Alice B. (æ 30, b. Oct 1869), plus three siblings; Alice shows children 5/4, so on two counts, Mandy must be George's daughter by a prior wife.

This appears to be the only time that, as an adult, Amanda Catherine gave her true age.  However, other data suggest she wasn't really a widow.  Prior to the late 20th Century, there definitely was a stigma attached to being divorced (worse yet, deserted).  So, Mandy might have been saving face by saying she was widowed.  It isn't far-fetched that she might have done so because my maternal grandmother did the same thing in the 1900 census.

LAD CHARGED CRUEL TREATMENT TO MOTHER

12-year Old Martinsburg Boy Picked Up Here—
Cared For by Humane Society.
Leaving his home in Martinsburg and coming all the way to Frederick because he was treated cruelly by his mother, Julian Corbin, a twelve-year-old boy, was picked up by Chief of Police Bruchey last Friday and was returned to West Virginia authorities yesterday.  When he reached home, he was placed in charge of an agent of a Humane Society.
The boy arrived in Brunswick on Thursday afternoon and slept over night there under a lumber pile.  The next morning he came into Frederick and made friends with Christopher Woerner, who notified the Chief of Police of the younster's (sic) case.  That night the boy was taken to jail and the pathetic story of his experience at home was told to Sheriff Roderick.  On his arm, Julian displayed a large stab-wound which he said was inflicted by a pen-knife by his mother.  He did not want to return home, for he declared that his mother had left her husband and was living with another man.
The sheriff searched the lad and on him were found a pistol, a flash-light, a box of cartridges and twenty-nine dollars.
Note that it doesn't say Julian's father had died, only that his mother had left him.  This is 1916, well after Amanda Catherine had said she was a widow in the 1910 census.

Hearing Tomorrow
Julian Corbin, the Martinsburg boy who told a pitiful tale to Sheriff Roderick, will be given a hearing in the West Virginia city Saturday morning at ten o'clock.  It is likely that he will be sent to a reform school.  The Martinsburg authorities misunderstood that Sheriff Roderick desired to care for the boy, but the Sheriff said this morning he had no such intentions.
