Retired Teacher Dies
MATOAKA (RNS) — Mrs. Hallie Bowen Carrico, 80, of Matoaka, died Saturday night in a Charlottesville, Va., hospital after a long illness.
   She was a retired Mercer County school teacher and had served as attendance director for the Mercer County Board of Education.
   Mrs. Carrico was a member of the Ashworth Memorial United Methodist Church at Matoaka.  She was a member of the United Methodist women and was graduated from Concord and Glenville State colleges and Radford College.
   Mrs. Carrico was the first teacher of U.S. Senator Robert C. Byrd when he entered public school.
  She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association, Princeton Chapter No. 53, Order of the Eastern Star, past OES worthy matron, past presideant (sic) of the Princeton Senior Woman's Club, was a member of the Matoaka Garden Club and recently was honored by the West Virginia Univeristy Agricultural Department by naming a holly tree in her honor.
   Born at Pembroke, Va., she was a daughter of the late Albert M. and Ettie Scott Bowen.
   Five brothers also preceded her in death.
   Surviors include her husband, Robert L. Carrico; one son, Robert L. Carrico Jr. of Mullens; one daughter, Mrs. C.C. (Nancy Leah) Henderson Jr. of Winchester, Va.; two brothers, Homer K. of Marion, Va., and Mark M. Bowen of Columbus, Ohio, and three grandchildren.
   The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the George W. Seaver Chapel in Princeton with Rev. Joe Stout in charge.  Entombment will be in Resthaven Mausoleum in Princeton.
   Friends may call from 6-9 p.m. today.
   Pallbearers will be Clinton Lily, Ira Southern, Lawrence Thorn, W.B. Phipps, Joe Friedl, James Davis, Claude Blankenship and Woodrow Bailey.
   Member of the OES will be in charge of graveside rites.
