   MAJ. WILLIAM BROWNE2, born in Salem, April 14, 1639.  He was a merchant, and lived in Salem.  He was a representative to the general court, one of the governor's council and justice of the court of general sessions and of the court of common pleas.  He married, first, Miss Hannah Corwin of Salem 29:10:1664; and she died Nov. 21, 1692, at the age of forty-eight.  He married, second, widow Rebecca Bayley of Boston April 26, 1694; and [he] died Feb. 14, 1715-6, aged seventy-six.  In his will, he mentioned his niece Sarah Woodward, dwelling in Great Britain, and his niece Anne Lechmere.  He bequeathed to Rev. Nicholas Noyes twenty-five poinds; Rev. George Corwine ten pounds; First church in Salem twenty pounds; poor of the First church and parish in Salem forty pounds; "toward finishing the almshouse or workhouse in Salem that is partly built for poor people," etc., fifty pounds more; "the Grammar school in Salem to kept in or nigh to ye Town house street, where its (sic) now being kept, being in ye body of ye town, towards making the same a free school," one hundred pounds; and to Harvard college in Cambridge one hundred pounds "to help support my grandchildren or their poster-
p. 160 ity while students there, if not any such, then any other poor Salem scholars that may live at college."  His wife Rebecca survived him, and died June --, 1736.

Jan. 28, 1744-5; and she d. July 12, 1753, and the age of seventy-four.  The lived in Salem.
