   CAPT. BENJAMIN BROWNE2, born in Salem in 1648.  He was a merchant and esquire, and lived in Salem.  He married Miss Mary Hicks of Charlestown in 1686.  She was from England, and died before her husband in 170-.  He died in Salem Dec. 7, 1708, leaving an estate of thirty thousand pounds.  In his will, he bequeathed to "Harvard college in Cambridge towards ye bringing up of some poor scholars in a special manner such as may belong to Salem" two hundred pounds; to the church of Salem fifty pounds, one-half for "ye furnishing of ye Lord's table" and one-half for "purchasing a decent bason for baptism"; to the grammar school in Salem, "towards making it a free school," sixty pounds; to the town of Salem, towards building an almshouse or workhouse for poor people, twenty pounds; to "my niece Mrs. Sarah Woodward, who dwells in England," two thousand pounds; and to "my brother William Browne, esq., my servant Indian boy named Peter."  Mr. Browne had real estate in Great Britian, Barbadoes and elsewhere.  He devised his homestead to his nephew, Capt. John Browne's son, Benjamin Browne.

His estate is worth £30,000 and he leaves a lousy £20 to the poorhouse?!  The oligarchy has always been with us, including taking money off shore.
