Comment:

We have a family photo labeled "Aunt Lucy Brown, Mt. Sterling, IL, 1865."  The question is, is it a picture of "Lucy A. BROWN" (b. 1839/40), unmarried daughter of Willard BROWN?  Or is it a picture of Lucy H. (MORRIS) BROWN (b. 1819/20), widow/divorcee of John J. BROWN, who is in the 1860 Census of Mt. Sterling?  And if the latter, is she related to us?  You would think one could tell easily whether the woman in the photo was age 25 or 45, but I'll be danged if I can.  We've yet to find any other indication of a link between Willard (b. NH) and John (b. NJ), and the birth of John in New Jersey argues against there being one.  If there is no relationship between the Lucy BROWN in the photo and the widow Lucy BROWN in the census, then it's the durndest coincidence that there are two Lucy BROWNs in Mt. Sterling, IL, ca. 1860-65, because this is a very small town!

This record is mis-indexed on the Broderbund Census Index (CD-317) as "John L. Brown" and as "West Sterling."  Lucy MORRIS is almost certainly Lucy BROWN's mother.

There is another family in the same dwelling: Mr. & Mrs. Pat O'BRIEN with their three children.
