One of hundreds of patients in the hospital.  Residence in such an asylum did not necessarily mean someone was mentally ill.  For example, alcoholism would be a reason for commitment.  Astonishingly, "promiscuity" could also be a reason for commitment.  Perhaps the fact that Frank had fathered a child out of wedlock may have had something to do with his being here.  Had Martha filed a bastardy claim?  County court records for the period may provide some answers.

Obviously, the enumerator was confused about relationships here.  Chester is the son of Frank's first wife, Calliope COPPINGER, so he is, indeed, Amanda's grandson.  Arthur, Teddy, and Georgie are Frank's children with Martha, so they should also be listed as grandchildren.
