John Armstrong was one of the early Colonial Justices of Cumberland County and a proprietary land agent for the Penns.  Armstrong was born in Brookborough Parish, County Fermanagh, in Ireland on October 13, 1717.  John Armstrong, his wife, his four brothers, and sister immigrated to the Cumberland Valley in Pennsylvania around 1748.  Having established himself as a surveyor, he and his nephew, William Lyon, surveyed the site of the future town of Carlisle in the early 1750s...
