James BLOUNT's coat of arms, with discussion.  The arms of our subject's son, Capt. James BLOUNT, are impaled, that is, a shield with the arms of both his father and his mother.  That half the shield is the BLOUNT arms and the other half the arms of Gilbert de CLARE has led to the deduction that our subject's wife was a CLARE.

The town of Worcester was the site of a critical battle in 1651 that brought an end to the English Civil Wars.  In an attempt to regain the throne, Charles II had gathered a Scottish Army and marched south until it reached Worcester.  With forces far outnumbering the King's, Oliver Cromwell led a faction of Parliamentarians against the King on August 22nd and captured the town.  Charles II escaped to France.

Gilbert de Clare, Earl of Gloucester ~ Or three chevronels Gules. [image of arms] The mother of Gilbert, 7th Earl of Gloucester and Hertford, was the second daughter of Edward I, and thus he was nephew to Edward II whom he accompanied to Bannockburn in June 1314.  There he disputed precedence with the Earl of Hereford, then Constable of England, and in an attempt to snatch a triumph rushed precipitately at the Scots on whose spears he died.
