Genealogy of John ROGERS, the Smithfield Martyr
My purpose here is to gather, as best I can, what is currently known with regard to the genealogy of John ROGERS (c1500-1555) and, with regard to his descendants, to search out those lines, but only those lines, that emigrated to the United States.  In other words, if you are an American with a family tradition of being descended from the martyr, then it is worthwhile — or, hopefully, will become worthwhile — to consult this web site.  Just don't get your hopes up because...
"After a thorough research in every available quarter and a careful examination of all the authorities, both public and private, at command, all that can at present be known, or reasonably presumed, in reference to his [John Rogers's] genealogy, will be found in the following pages.  Especial attention has been paid to this subject because there are very many in England, and many more in America, who proudly claim their descent from him and who will be glad to know with what reason and upon what grounds such claims are based.  It is much to be feared that a large number, especially in the latter country, will be compelled to abandon the pleasing tradition which they have so long cherished and resign all hope of commencing their pedigrees with the name of the Smithfield sufferer."
(Chester 1861: 221-222)
UPDATE:  I have come to the conclusion that my own family's tradition of being descended from John ROGERS is totally unsubstantiated.  Therefore, I have stopped working on his genealogy.  What I currently have online is probably all I will ever do on him.
