Biographical Sketch of James DAVIS (1744-1822)
Source:    Anon.  1986.  Family Histories, 1797-1986.  Christian County Genealogical Society, Hopkinsville, KY.

Note:  the land surveyed in 1785 by Col. John MONTGOMERY, brother-in-law of our subject, is on the Red River near Clarksville, Montgomery Co., TN.  Early records of this location appear in Christian County because the original state line, surveyed in 1788 and known as "Walker's Line," was wrongly placed too far North.  In 1826, the state boundary line was resurveyed, and Christian County lost 12 miles of its southern district to Montgomery Co., TN.  This lost land included the 1120 acres belonging to James DAVIS.  Davis last paid taxes on the land in 1821, then died in Missouri in 1822, so we know within a narrow window when he moved to Missouri.

JAMES DAVIS #1

This James DAVIS was one if not the earliest settler who lived in the south eastern part of this county on the West Fork of Red River.  His land had been surveyed for Col. John Montgomery in 1785 and assigned to James DavisDavis sold off a portion of this 1120 acre survey to other settlers and finally sold the remainder of his land when he moved to Missouri after 1820.  Dr. John F. Bell purchased the Davis land from one of the Davis sons-in-law.

James Davis was married to Hannah Ramsey, daughter of Josiah Ramsey of Wythe Co., Va.  James and Hanna were the parents of several children.  The foundation of a water grist mill built by James Davis in 1809 was still visible in 1884 according to Addison C. Catlett as reported in Perrin's History of Christian Co.  The grist mill was on Montgomery Creek, which had been named for Col. John Montgomery whose wife Phebe, was a sister of Hannah Ramsey Davis.

The James Davis land would be known today (1985) as the land where Glover's Cave is located and to the north of the cave.
