John William Bobbitt was born on February 16, 1782, in Warren County, North Carolina, the son of Isham and Elizabeth James Bobbitt.  He married Hester Boney (or Banes) in South Carolina circa 1802.  In 1803 John William and Hester Bobbitt moved to Christian County, Kentucky, with others of the Bobbitt family.

John William and Hester had nine known children, all believed to have been born in Christian County, Kentucky:  Elizabeth Bobbitt, born circa 1804; Willis Jefferson Bobbitt, born circa 1806; Sally Bobbitt, born circa 1808; Stephen D. Bobbitt, born April 17, 1810; Lucinda Bobbitt, born circa 1811; Isham D. Bobbitt, born February 10, 1812; John William Bobbitt, born Deptember 11, 1813; Emsley C. Bobbitt, born ca. 1817; and William G. Bobbitt, born circa 1819.

Hester Boney Bobbitt died on September 9, 1844.  Two years later, on October 3, 1846, John William married Lucy Jones in Robertson County, Tennessee.  There were no children born of this marriage.

John William Bobbitt was a Baptist minister of the gospel.  He performed many marriages in the community, both for members of his family and for others.  It is believed that the present site of the Kelly Baptist Church is located on part of the original Bobbitt land purchase.  Two acres were given by deed in 1870.

John William Bobbitt died on his farm in north Christian County, near Kelly, Kentucky, on July 25, 1855.  He was buried in the Bobbitt family cemetery.

The will of John William Bobbitt was presented to the September 3, 1855, term of court in Christian County, but not recorded and ordered to be held over to the Novermber term.  After the four sons resisted the recording of said will on November 3, 1855, it was dismissed.  The will is not in the file.  One can only speculate on its content and wonder why it was so objectionable to the family.

Descendants of the Bobbitt family lived on the farm near Kelly until about 1906, when Nancy McCord Bobbitt, widow of Emsley William Bobbitt (1855-1896) sold the remaining property.
