Joseph VENABLE
Mary Ann __?__
Lucy DAVENPORT
Joseph & Lucy show up in many pedigrees with little or no documentation, in part because he has been used to gain admission to the D.A.R. and S.A.R.  In recent years, these organizations have become more rigorous about pedigrees being documented, but the applications from the 1940s thru 1960s show no documentation, so we'll be living with newbies using them for the foreseeable future.
Husband:  Joseph VENABLE
Birth:  bef. 1755
Marriage-1:
Wife-1:  Mary Ann __?__
Marriage-2:
Said to have married ca. 1745 in Louisa Co., VA, but Lucy would have been too young, and there's no indication Joseph ever lived in Louisa Co.
Wife-2:  Lucy DAVENPORT
Birth:  bef. 1755

The average 18th or 19th Century woman married first at the age of 19, had her first child at the age of 20 and her last at the age of 43, for a span of fecudity of about 23 years.  So, if Lucy is the mother of all these children, she had a typical span of fecundity of 23 years and cannot have been born much earlier than ca. 1743 — making the alleged marriage date of ca. 1745 biologically impossible.
Children with Mary Ann:
-
Children with Lucy DAVENPORT — born in Spartanburg Co., SC:
1.  Elizabeth VENABLE, b. ca. 1762; d. 5 Oct 1857, Allen Co., KY
2.  Joseph VENABLE, Jr.
3.  Larkin VENABLE, b. ca. 1767; m. 22 Nov 1811, Warren Co., KY, Mary "Molly" (ROUNTREE) BLASINGAME (1771-c1860s)
4.  Rebecca VENABLE, b. 5 Nov 1778; d. 10 Apr 1872, Salinas, Monterey Co., CA; m. 19 Feb 1799, Spartanburg Co., SC, Anderson COCKRILL (1778-1861)
5.  John VENABLE, b. 1770-80 [closer to 1780]
6.  James VENABLE, b. ca. 1780; m. 22 Jan 1803, Warren Co., KY, Rebecca SPAN; lived Allen Co., KY
7.  Lucy VENABLE, b. ca. 1785; m. 11 Feb 1804, Warren Co., KY, Solomon WILLIAMS

If, as alleged, our subject is the Joseph VENABLE in the land records of Spotsylvania Co., VA, from 1747 to 1772 (see Sources below), his early children cannot have been born in Spartanburg Co., SC, as alleged.  He had to have had a wife before Lucy

Geographical Notes:   Warren Co. was formed in 1792 from Logan Co.; Allen Co. was formed in 1815 from Warren Co., so all the pre-1815 locations listed as Warren Co. were presumably in Allen Co., except things like marriage records, which will still be found in the Warren County Court House records.  Today, the counties are adjacent.  Henry Co. was formed in 1821 from Amerindian land.

Joseph VENABLE appears just once, in 1799 (p. 37); he's the only VENABLE in the book.

1800 U.S. Census Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com):  the 1800 KY census was lost, so where available, tax lists are substituted on this CD.  We find Joseph VENABLE still in Logan County.  So, it appears we have two different Joseph VENABLEs here, and the one in Logan County appears not to be our subject.

.  William Armstrong Crozier, ed.  1905.  Spotsylvania County Records, 1721-1800 (reprinted 1965, Genealogical Publ. Co., Baltimore; Broderbund CD-513; online at Ancestry.com):
Joseph x Venable for £15 15s. 8d. curr. to John Minor of Spts. Co., mortgage, Goods and Chattels. Recd. 2 Jun 1747.
Comment:  the "x" in Joseph's name implies, "his mark" (i.e., that he cannot sign his name and put his mark, instead).
Joseph x Venable of Spts. Co. to James Townsend of Orange Co. £17 curr. Goods and chattels. Mortgage 2 May 1758.
Joseph Venable and Lucy, his wife, to John Davis of Spts. Co. £8 10s. curr. 100 a. in Spts. Co. No witnesses. 7 Nov 1763.
The year 1763 is about the earliest we could find Lucy married to Joseph.
John Davis of St. Geo. Par., Spts. Co., and Martha, his wife, to Ambrose Shacklefor of Par. and Co. afsd. £10.  100 a. in St. Geo. Par., Spts. Co., bounded by lands of Jose. Venable, Jas. Townsend, John Shackleford and Wm. Thurston, it having been purchased by sd. Davis of Jos. Venable, etc. 3 Nov 1766.
Joseph Venable, of Spts. Co., and Sussie, his wife, to Clayton Coleman, of same Co. £40 curr. 100 a. in Spts. Co. No witnesses. 20 Aug 1772.
Note that, in the 18th and 19th Centuries, capital "S" and capital "L" were virtually indistinguishable when hand written.  So, "Sussie" is probably a misreading of "Lussie," which would be a phonetic misspelling of "Lucy."  Such phonetic misspellings were common before the 20th Century (see discussion).
