Sources (n.b., when Genesee County
was split to form Wayne County in 1841, the part of Covington remaining
in Genesee was renamed Pavilion; in 1842, parts of LeRoy and Stafford were
added to Pavilion):
1. Marriage Record: 2. 1840 Census Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com): can't find. 3. 1850 Census Every-Name-Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com): can't find. There is a Frances TORREY (æ 11, b. VT) living with the BAILY family in Orwell, Addison Co., VT, and an unmarried William TORRY (æ 25, b. IL), farm laborer, living with the DERBY family in Brandon, Rutland Co., VT. 4a. 1860 Census Every-Name-Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com): can't find Lois or William. Helen is married and living in Brandon; Frances is living with Helen; Charles is married and living in Iowa. There is a William TORREY (æ 30, b. NY, wife Susan) living in Hillside Co., MI, whom some say is our subject. Some also say he is the William who died 22 Nov 1863, Owassa [now Owosso], Shiawassee Co., MI, serving in 10th MI Cavalry, but rosters say this individual is William J. TORREY. 4b. 1860 Census Every-Name-Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com, Image #38 of 78): Brandon P.O., Brandon, Rutland Co., VT, Roll M653_1326, p. 35B, PN 72, 547/495, enumerated 27 Jun 1860, official enumeration date 1 Jun 1860 (extracted by Diana Gale Matthiesen):
5. 1870 Census Every-Name-Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com): can't find Lois or William. Helen and Frances are married and still living in Brandon; Charles is married and still living in Iowa. 6. 1880 Census Every-Name-Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com): can't find Lois or William. Helen and Frances are married and still living in Brandon; Charles is married and still living in Iowa. 7. 1890 Census: the 1890 Census Population Schedules were destroyed. 8. 1900 Census Every-Name-Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com): Lois died too early in the year to have been enumerated in 1900 — if, indeed, she really did live to 1900. My inability to find her in the censuses may be because she remarried, but one wonders why she is never found living with or near her children, especially in 1850 when all were minors and unmarried. 9. Donald Lines Jacobes. 1962. "Clarence Almon Torrey, 1869-1962." The New England Historical and Genealogical Register 116(Apr): 158-159. Among other things, states that Clarence's father, Charles Oscar TORREY, was born in Pavilion, Genessee Co., NY; however, Pavilion was not created until 1841 and Charles was born in 1836. Presumably then, Charles was born in what was then Covington, Stafford, or LeRoy. As most secondary sources say the family was in LeRoy, I take it that was where they had been before the renaming in 1841. 10.
