2.  Message posted by me (DGM) on 8 Feb 1999 to the old STRAUB GenConnect Board (now the message boards at RootsWeb.com/Ancestry.com):
I have photocopies of a two-page excerpt from "Die Alamannische Schule: Geigenbau des 17.Jahrhunderts im südlichen Schwarzwald und in der Schweiz" by Olga Adelmann and Annette Otterstedt (1997. Staatliches Institut für Musikforschung Preußischer Kulturbesitz, Berlin).  As best I can translate the title, the book is about the "Alamannische School" of 17th-Century violin makers in the Black Forest of Germany and Switzerland.  The excerpt appears to include biographical information on violin-maker Frantz STRAUB STRUB) and his sons, who were also violin makers.

If anyone can read German and would be willing to translate and excerpt the genealogical information, it would be tremendously appreciated (I can snail-mail you a photocopy or email you a transcription).  If anyone knows the mailing address of the publisher and can write and ask them (in German) for permission to post it verbatim (both the German transcription and the Engligh translation) here on the GenConnect "STRAUB Biographies" board, that would be terrific.

As best I can gather (not knowing German), Frantz STRAUB was born 9 Jun 1640 in Füssen, the son of Joseph STRAUB and Maria SCHMID; he died in 1696.  In 1663, Frantz married Catharina ESSER (ESSLER? ESSLERIN?; b. ca. 1640) in Friedenweiler.  They had the following children:

Simon, b. 1662-4 in Friedenweiler, m. 1686 Agathe MEYER, d. 1730;
Martin;
Johannes, b. 1668, m. 14 Jan 1691 Susanne FONBACH (or VEHENBACH or BERNBACH), in Friedenweiler;
Hans Michael, b. 9 Sep 1675; and
Catharina.

Other names mentioned in the biography: Fritz Bruno EGGER, Adolf LAYER, Curt SACHS, Hans KROUCHDALER, Ulrich KROUCHDALER, Wolfgang WOLFF, Georg STRAUB.

This seems to be the same Frantz STRAUB (and sons?) briefly mentioned among the violin-makers in my other post to this board entitled "STRAUB / STRAUBE violin-makers, Germany."

Note:  this last message no longer appears to be on the board. (?!)
