Jacob SCHAEFFER
Ms. __?__
Eleanor CONNETT
WARNING:  I have no direct evidence that Jacob had an earlier wife though the age difference between Jacob and Eleanor immediately suggests there would have been one.  The elder children present in the 1820 census reinforce that there likely was an earlier wife though there is no certainty that these were Jacob's children; they may have been boarders, hired help, or other kin.  If there were two wives, the next question is which wife birthed which children, and to know that, for certain, we need Eleanor's marriage record.  So, is 1820 a guess, or is there a basis for it?  A marriage in 1820 would have been a late first marriage for her.  Or did she, also, have a prior marriage, so are some of the older children hers and not Jacob's?  Please consider this page tentative.

Eleanor's parents were in Ohio by 1805, so there's no way she was married in New Jersey.  The big question is whether the year was a guess or supported by evidence.

2.  1810 Census Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com):  not found in Ohio, but the entire 1810 Ohio census was lost (except for Washington County); there are dozens of Jacob SCHAEFFER/SHAFFER/etc.'s in Pennsylvania, with no way to tell which might be our subject, if any.

3.  1820 Census Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com, Image #9 of 10; extracted by Diana Gale Matthiesen):
1820 OH Fairfield Co. Hocking Twp. Roll M33_87 p. 80/154 Ln. 20 Jacob Shaeffer 021110-31300-0-300
These data indicate:
No. & Sex  Age Class Therefore Born Individuals Inferred
2 males 10-15 1804-1810 = Son B
= Son A
1 male 16-18 1801-1804 = ?
1 male 26-44 1775-1794 = Jacob (b. 1784/5)
3 females 9 or under 1810-1820 = Anna Maria (b. 1818)
= Daughter C
= Daughter B
1 female 10-15 1804-1810 = Daughter A
3 females 16-25 1794-1804 = ?
= ?
= Eleanor (b. 1794/5)
3 persons engaged in agriculture
*In the 1820 Census, the third column is age class 16-18 and the fourth column is age class 16-25, which means any individual in column three is duplicated in column four.  So, for an accurate representation of the household, the number in column three should be subtracted from the number in column four.
The question here is how many of these are Jacob's or Eleanor's children and how many are other kin, boarders, or hired help.  Anna Maria is almost certainly Eleanor's daughter, but she may be the only one who is actually their child.  Or they may all be Jacob's children, except for the two females in Eleanor's age class.

4.  1830 Census Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com, Image #3 of 20; extracted by Diana Gale Matthiesen):
1830 OH Fairfield Co. Hocking Twp. Lancaster Roll 130 p. 202 Ln. 20 Jacob Shaffer 001 200 100 - 222 111
These data indicate:

2 males 15-19 1810-1815 = ?

2 females 5-9 1820-1825 = Sarah (b. 1824/5)
= Daughter D
2 females 10-14 1815-1820 = Anna Maria (b. 1818)
= Daughter C
1 female 15-19 1810-1815 = Daughter B
1 female 20-29 1800-1810 = Daughter A
1 female 30-39 1790-1800 = Eleanor (b. 1794/5)
The three teenage males were not in the household in 1820, so they could not be our subject's children.  The girls in 1820 are here in 1830 (and all but the eldest is in 1840), so they would appear to be our subject's daughters.

5.  1840 Census Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com, Image #2-3 of 21 — list was roughly alphabetized; numerical data pages precede name pages; extracted by Diana Gale Matthiesen):
1840 OH Fairfield Co. Hocking Twp. Roll 394 pp. 320A-320B Ln. 2 Shafer Jacob 120 100 010 - 012 230 100 0111000
These data indicate:
No. & Sex Age Class Therefore Born Individuals Inferred
1 male 4 or under 1835-1840 = Jacob C. (b. 1837/8)
2 males 5-9 1830-1835 = Eli (b. 1832/3)

2 females 10-14 1825-1830 = Henrietta (b. 1827/8)

2 females 15-19 1820-1825 = Sarah (b. 1824/5)
= Daughter D
3 females 20-29 1810-1820 = Anna Maria (b. 1818)
= Daughter C
= Daughter B
1 female 40-49 1790-1800 = Eleanor (b. 1794/5)
1 person employed in agriculture
1 person employed in commerce
1 person employed in manufactures and trades
The teenage male was not in the household in 1830, so he appears not to be their son. The three sons born in the 1830s are with them in 1850, so they do appear to be their sons.  The seven daughters from the 1830 census are still here, so they appear to be our subject's children, too.

7.  1860 Census Every-Name-Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com, Image #33 of 47):  Lancaster P.O., Hocking Twp., Fairfield Co., OH, Roll M653_960, p. 72A, PN 142, 1003/971, enumerated 6 Aug 1860, official enumeration date 1 Jun 1860 (extracted by Diana Gale Matthiesen):
Elenor Shaeffer 65 F   Widowed 6000 128 New Jersey
Sarah J    " 33 F         Ohio
Henrietta  " 31 F         "
Listed next to son, Theodore SHAEFFER (æ 29, b. OH, wife Mary A.).

8.  1870 Census Every-Name-Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com, Image #42 of 77 — indexed "Elener"):  Lancaster P.O., Berne Twp., Fairfield Co., OH, Roll M593_1198, p. 40B, PN 42, 305/313, enumerated 15 Jun 1870, official enumeration date 1 Jun 1870 (extracted by Diana Gale Matthiesen):
Eckert Henry S 55 M W Farmer 40,000 4,000 Ohio
______ Ann M 50 F W Keeping House     Ohio
[Henry & Ann's children]
Shaeffer Elaner 75 F W Lives with Son   3,500 Ohio
Henry is Eleanor's son-in-law, not her son.  A birth in 1794/5 in Ohio is very early (Ohio didn't even become a state until 1803); in other censuses, Eleanor gives her birthplace as New Jersey, which jibes with other information.
