Sources:
1. Marriage Record: Ohio began recording marriages as soon as it achieved statehood in 1803. I can't find an Ohio marriage record for any RIPLEY with any Eunice, so it seems probable they weren't married in Ohio. New York didn't start recording marriages until 1880/81, so no hope there. 2. 1830 U.S. Census Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com): there are only two John RIPLEYs in the 1830 Census of Ohio, one in Guernsey County who is still there in 1940 and 1850, the other in Harrison County with both he and his wife too old to be our subjects. 3. 1840 U.S. Census Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com): there are only two John RIPLEYS in the 1840 Census of Ohio, the one in Guernsey County who is still there in 1850, the other in Tuscarawas County with both he and his wife too old to be our subjects. Given that Eunice has no children born after 1833/4, she was probably a widow in 1840 and wasn't enumerated as head-of-household. 4a. 1850 U.S. Census Every-Name-Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com, Image #22 of 23): Dist. No. 6 in Monroe Twp., Allen Co., OH, Roll M432_657, p. 379B, 2068/2068, enumerated 28 Sep 1850, official enumeration date 1 Jun 1850 (extracted by Diana Gale Matthiesen):
4b. 1850 U.S. Census Every-Name-Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com): there are no RIPLEYs in Putnam Co. or Defiance Co., OH. The only other RIPLEY in Allen Co., OH, is a Clem RIPLEY (æ 17, b. NY) living with the SHINDLER family, who appears to be the same person as the Clement above, enumerated a second time because he was working out. 5. 1860 U.S. Census Every-Name-Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com): a twice-widowed Eunice is living in Defiance Co., OH; no RIPLEY children are with her. There is a John RIPLEY in Defiance Co. (æ 30, b. NY) who appears to be Eunice's son. John and his wife are the only RIPLEYs in Defiance Co. The only RIPLEYs in Allen Co. are a Samuel W. RIPLY and his wife. There are no RIPLEYs in Putnam Co. Clement is missing from the 1860 census, but he reappears in 1870. 6. Public Member Trees (online at Ancestry.com). |
