John should be in the next higher age category, yet there's no doubt these are our subjects.

1850 Slave Schedule Mims, Caroline H. KY Caldwell Co. Dist. 2 p. 810
Why Caroline is missing from the index of the Population Schedules, I don't know.  She might turn up in a  page-by-page search of the Caldwell County Population Schedules.

Most of Col. John's slaves must have been bequeathed to his children (or sold).

3c.  1850 Census Index/Microfilm (online at GenealogyLibrary.com):  1st District, Trigg Co., KY, p. 290B, 13/13, enumerated 2 Aug 1850 (extracted by Diana Gale Matthiesen):

Sarah Jane (MIMS) TYLER is Col. John's sister.  Secondary sources say these MIMS children are sons of our subject, but there is no room for Byron in Col. John's household in the 1840 census (unless Byron's age, here, is wrong).  And as Caroline is still alive and a widow of means, why would any of her children not be living with her?

4.  William Henry Perrin, ed.  1884.  County of Christian, Kentucky:  Historical and Biographical.  F.A. Battey Publ. Co., Chicago.
p. 277 CHAPTER XII...
UNION SCHOOLHOUSE PRECINCT, designated on the map as No. 6, extends from Hopkinsville Precinct on the east to the Trigg County line on the west.  On the north it is bounded by Bainbridge and Hamby Precincts, and on the south by the Lafayette Precinct... Little River laves its entire southern border, dividing it from Lafayette Precinct, while the Sinking Fork of that river forms the western border, dividing it from Bainbridge Precinct.
p. 278 About 1806 [Samuel MEANS] built a schoolhouse, the first in the precinct, in which his brother William afterward taught. The old Means school is memorable not only from the fact that some eminent men have taught in it, but also from the further fact that from its classic precincts many of its scholars have gone forth into the world to win fame. As teachers after William Means may be mentioned, among others, Joseph Bozarth, Otho Graves, Addison Stevenson, Thomas Smith (who afterward became a distinguished Unitarian minister), and John Mimms...
p. 279 Mr. Mimms, the father of John, Addison and David Mimms, came from Virginia about 1816-17, and settled about one mile west of Means' Spring...
Is this John MIMMS really our subject?  It doesn't seem like he stayed long enough in Christian Co. to have been mentioned as a school teacher there.  I am assuming "Mr. Mimms" is Linah MIMS, as he was the only MIMS in Christian Co. during this period.  (Shadrach MIMS and Gideon MIMS — first cousins of Linah — were in the part of Christian Co. that became Todd Co. in 1820.)
