William's complement of children jibes exactly (i.e., four boys,

It appears our subject is a widower living with his married son, Jesse.
Or is Magdalene estranged from William and living somewhere else?

The two stones do look like a pair, though they're in separate photos,
so you can't tell how near they are to one another in the cemetery.
There are no dates on the stones, so be aware they must have been supplied
by the submitter from some other sources. Were the stones placed
at the time or added later by family genealogists? I'm especially
suspicious of "Magedelene's" entry because there's evidence that William's
wife may have died between 1830 and 1846, and William's wife was very young
to have had a prior husbend. Unless the stone is adjacent to William's,
I would assume this was the marker for another woman, one whose maiden
name was BROWN. It's extremely rare — as in never seen it happen
— that a woman's prior husband's surname is included on her tombstone.
Please see
this page for a discussion of the reliability of death certificates
and tombstones. |
11. Kenneth Corbin. 2009. The Leaves of the Corbin
Tree. Vol. 1 of 2. Self-published,
Louisville, KY:
The author did not routinely
put surnames in all-caps, so I have converted them to make for easier scanning
for names. Also, the text was obviously computer-generated from a
genealogy database, so it's needlessly verbose. For the sake of of
brevity, I've extracted the facts and re-worded the text. |

Transcriber's comment. This is a very strange migration pattern:
from Stafford/Culpeper Cos., VA, to Lawrence Co.,
KY, back to Culpeper Co., VA, to Wilkes Co., NC, then again to Lawrence
Co., KY. I don't believe for a minute they were married in Kentucky. |
