Abel W. KELLEY
Jemima KITTLE
WARNING:  Our subject is being given middle name, William, then becoming confused with William KELLEY (1777/8- ), who married a sister of our subject's wife.  In some cases, people are making William the father of Abel, but clearly they are too close in age to be father and son.  These appear to be brothers who married sisters.
Husband:  Abel W. KELLY / KELLEY
Birth:  6 Jun 1787, VA
Death:  17 Nov 1878
Occupation:  farmer
Presumed Brother:  William KELLEY, b. 1777/8, PA; m. Janneke "Jane/Gean" KITTLE
Marriage:  24 Sep 1809, Randolph Co., VA [now WV]
Wife:  Jemima / Jemimah KITTLE
Birth:  15 Sep 1788
Death:  22 Nov 1860, Randolph Co., VA [now WV]
Disposition:  buried Arnold Hill Cemetery, near Elkins, Randolph Co., WV
Occupation:  homemaker
Father:  Jacob KITTLE
Mother:  Mary HENDRICKSON
Children:
Listed below are the children attributed to this couple in files at WorldConnect. It is impossible for any one woman to produce children over a span of 37 years.  The average maximus span of fecundity for a woman is 23 years (from age 20 to age 43).  Absolom is too old to be their son, and they'd only been married one month at the time Lovell was born.  While it's not impossible that Jemima was 8 months pregnant when she married, it is impossible for her to have had a child in October of 1809 and another in April of 1810, just seven months apart.  Also, there does not appear to be room for either of them in the 1820 census.  It does not appear that Absolom and Lovell are their children, as shown by many secondary sources.  These may be sons of William KELLEY, who married in 1798, so could be their father.

.  Absolom KELLEY, b. 1803; d. 29 Dec 1858
.  Lovell KELLEY, b. ca. 3 Oct 1809; d. 22 Feb 1876

Eighteen children in 23 years is astounding (the average would be 12, with some not surviving).  By removing the two oldest children and the one youngest child attributed to them, apparently incorrectly, we at least have a normal span of fecundity for Jemima of 23 years.  I find myself wondering if she didn't have more than just one set of twins.

  1.  Ruth KELLEY, b. 10 Apr 1810; d. 7 Apr 1863
  2.  William L. KELLEY, b. 1811; d. 1832
  3.  Jacob KELLEY, b. 1813; d. 1835
  4.  Benjamin KELLEY, b. 21 May 1814; d. 28 Feb 1901
  5.  Mary KELLY, b. 1815/6
  6.  Nancy KELLEY, b. 1817
  7.  Jerusha KELLEY, b. 30 Jun 1819; d. 18 Jul 1910
  8.  Dolbeare KELLEY, b. 1820
  9.  Thurza KELLY, b. 1821; d. 1874
10.  Harrison KELLY, b. 12 Sep 1822; d. 7 Dec 1917
11.  John C. KELLEY, b. 1824; d. 1895
12.  Asa KELLEY, b. 1825; d. 1862
13.  Jemima KELLY, b. 1827; d. 1866
14.  Abel H. KELLEY, b. 1827; d. 1855
15.  Asher KELLEY, b. 1829; d. 1860
16.  David B. KELLY, b. 5 Feb 1832; d. 17 Jan 1911
17.  Lydia KELLY, b. 5 Feb 1832; d. 1851
18.  Lovell KELLY, b. 1832/3

This has to be our subject, but how did the tally get so screwed up?  The only other KELLYs in Randolph County were William and Ebenezer.

Lydia    " 19 F       "
Lovell   " 17 M   do   "
Elias    " 11 M       "
I don't see how Elias can be Jemima's son; Jemima would have been 50 years old when he was born.  Listed next to William KELLY (æ 72, b. PA), who is three households from Absolom KELLY (æ 47, b. VA).

7b.  1850 Census Index/Microfilm (online at GenealogyLibrary.com):  Clay Twp., Huntingdon Co., PA, p. 208B, 54/54, enumerated 14 Oct 1850 (extracted by Diana Gale Matthiesen):

Enoch Shore 17 M     Pa
Asher Kelly 20 M Labr   Va

Joseph Houck 20 M Carpenter   Pa
My question is:  how were people able to attach Asher to our subject?

8.  1860 Census Every-Name-Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com, Image #99-100 of 126):  Beverly P.O., Randolph Co., VA, Roll M653_1374, pp. 96-97, PN 96-97, 688/692, enumerated 24 Jul 1860, official enumeration date 1 Jun 1860 (extracted by Diana Gale Matthiesen):
