2a. 1830 Census Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com): they should be in NC, but I can't find them. I even did a page-by-page search of Wilkes County. Of the two in the index, the Cyrus JAMES in Mobile, AL, is free colored; the one in York Co., VA, is in his 40s as is his wife.

2b. Census Index: U.S. Selected Counties, 1830 (Broderbund CD-315): except for the two indexed above, not found, and I really looked — nor was there a likely Silas.
