2.  1840 Census Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com):  not found, but not really expected because he appears to have been unmarried in 1840 (there are two Samuel ICKES in the 1840 census of PA, but both are too old to be our subject).  The only individual in Union Co., PA, with a surname approaching ICKES is Lewis ICKY (æ 50-60) in West Buffalo Twp.  Lewis has no son in Samuel's age class, but he has one in the next lower age class, so if we accept this minor error, Lewis could be Samuel's father.  Certainly, the ICKY spelling is extremely rare.
