p. 216 96.  STEPHEN6 (DANIEL,5 EBENEZER,4 EBENEZER,3 STEPHEN,2 JOHN1), b. 10 May 1762; m. 7 July 1782, Mary Taylor, b. 13 August 1760.  He d. at East Bloomfield, New York, 24 February 1813. (Church Records.)  She d. at Richmond, New York, 25 June 1841.

In about 1796 he removed with his family from Egremont, Berkshire County, Massachusetts, to East Bloomfield, Ontario County, New York, and was a member of the church there in that year.  The records of Egremont were destroyed by fire prior to 1838, and those for the early years of the adjoining town of Sheffield, from which it was set off, are missing.  From statements made by him in his application for a pension we learn the dates of his birth and marriage, the name and birth of his wife, and that he resided in and was a soldier from Egremont during the Revolution.  From an old "Sampler" in the possession of his descendants, we secure the names and births of his children.

Constructively Stephen6 is placed as a son of Daniel5 Hopkins of Harwinton and Canaan, Connecticut, and of the Oblong in Dutchess County, New York, as is stated under his father's family.

Stephen Hopkins of Egremont served as a private in the Massachusetts troops in the Revolution as follows:  Capt. Enoch Noble's Company, Col. Ezra Wood's Regiment; enlisted 15 May 1778, discharged 7 February

p. 217 1779; service 8 months 24 days, at North River, enlistment 8 months from time of arrival at Peekskill; also Capt. Roswell Downing's Company, Lieut. Col. Miles Powell's (Berkshire Company) Regiment; enlisted 19 July 1779, discharged 27 August (also given 23 August) 1779; service 1 month 9 days; company marched to New Haven, Connecticut, to serve for 1 month; also Capt. Adam Kasson's Company, Col. Israel Chapen's (Third) Regiment; enlisted 18 October 1779, discharged 21 November 1779; service 1 month 8 days at Claverack; regiment raised for 3 months; also, list of men raised for the 6 months service and returned by Brigadier General Paterson as having passed muster in a return dated Camp Tottoway, 25 October 1780; also, payroll for 6 months' men raised by the town of Egremoont for service in the Continental Army during 1780; service 5 months 19 days, including travel (975 miles) home; also, private, Capt. John Spoor's Company, Col. John Ashley, Jr.'s, Regiment; enlisted 12 October 1781, discharged 23 October 1781; service 11 days; company ordered to march to Barne's Heths in Stillwater, 12 October 1781, on an alarm. (Massachusetts Soldiers in the Revolution, 8:245-46.)

On 21 May 1846, Victor N. Hopkins of Richmond, New York, applied for the pension due on account of his father's services, for the benefit of Cynthia Holmes, Berinthia Phelps, and himself, as the only surviving children, and the claim was allowed.  (U.S. Penson Office, W. File, No. 18036.)
