Stockton (Ward 2), San Joaquin Co., CA, Roll 86 (Book 1), pp. 162A-175A, PN 9-35, 66/63, enumerated 2 Aug 1870, official enumeration date 1 Jun 1870 (extracted by Diana Gale Matthiesen):
p. 165A Ln 28 Hopkins M 55 F W Keeps House     England Insane
Amazing.  This asylum consists of 1045 inmates — every single one labeled, "insane" — and three staff, labeled "Keeper, Bookkeeper, and Clerk."  The inmates all appear to be single (no families or children), they are overwhelmingly foreign born, the vast majority are "prime" adults (in their 30s-50s), and nearly all are employed, at something.  You get the impression this is an immigrant labor camp, not a hospital.  I'll bet the history of this institution would make a fascinating story.

3.  1880 Census Index/Extraction (online at FamilySearch.org):  not found, as least not in California as a HOPKINS born in England or ca. 1815.

The IT guys on the big iron hated the Personal Computer because it gave users freedom and power; now they've conned you into being back under their control.
