In the name of God Amen, I Daniel Hopkins of the County of Edgecombe and State of North Carolina being being in common health and of sound mind and memory and considering the uncertainty of this mortal life that it is appointed unto man once to die, I therefore make and ordain as this my last will and Testament in manner and form following, viz, I first of all give my body to the earth to be buried in a Christian like manner and my soul to God that gave it, with respect to my worldly property I dispose of in the following manner,

Item, I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife Mary Hopkins the following negros, Bunna, Henry, Bettie, and Mahala, also one mare called Jin, one Gig and Harnes, two feather Beds and necessary furniture---to her forever.

Item, I give to my Daughter in Law Julia Hopkins widow of William D. Hopkins one hundred dollars to be raised out of my Estate to her forever-

Item, I give to my Daughter in Law Jennet E Hopkins Daughter of William D. Hopkins, the following Negroes, Esau, Rose, James & Margarett, they and their increase forever also one tract of land called the Shivers Tract, containing about three hundred acres adjoining the lands of Frederick Hopkins and others, and should
the said Jennet E Hopkins die without a living child lawfully begotten of her body, it is my desire and will that the above named property Should be equally divided between my Lawful heirs, Jarret Hopkins, Henry A. Hopkins, Thomas C. Hopkins and Harriet Stansell----

Item, I give and bequeath unto my son Jarret Hopkins, one Tract of land called the Billy Place adjoining the land of Frederick Hopkins called the Price Place, I also give to my son Jarret Hopkins the following negrows, viz, [indecipherable], Any, Rachael, Luke, Nathan, Julia, Ellick, Robert & Charles, they and their increase forever.

Item, I give and bequeath unto my Daughter Hariet Stansell the land I purchased of Aaron Atkinson adjoining the lands of William C. Leigh, Willia M Harrel and others Containing by estimation six hundred fifty acres more or less---I also give to my Daughter Hariet Stansell the following negrows viz, Dorcas, Sook, Reuben, Jesse, Jordan, Henry, Sarah, & Jane they and their increase to her forver---

Item, I give and bequeath unto my two grandaughters Jennet Loueser Jenkins and Mary Elizabeth Jenkins the Two lots in Tarborough known as the Lackey Lot and the Guyon Lot also I give to my two grandaughters Jennet Loueser Jenkins and Mary Elizabeth Jenkins the following negrows viz- Anarea, Samuel, Mannuel, Lewis, & Henry Junr they and their increase to them forever----

Item, it is my will and desire that all my property that I have not disposed of should be sold on a Credit of six months and out of the proceds of the sales and what money I have or may be due me at my death to pay all my just Debts and the balance, I want Equally Divided between my beloved wife, Mary Hopkins and my son Jarret Hopkins and my son Henry A. Hopkins and my Daughter Hariet Stansell and my son Thomas C. Hopkins.  Lastly I Constitute and appoint my son Jarret Hopkins and Jessey Stansell as my Executors to this my last will and Testament given under my hand and seal this 1st day of April Anno domini 1845

State of North Carolina Edgecombe County I Daniel Hopkins do make this codicil to be taken as a part of my last will and Testament as follows that is to say Whereas I have by my said will given my son Thomas C. Hopkins a Certain negro woman named Sarah Twenty Eight or Thirty years old now I do hereby revoke and make void that part of my son Thomas C. Hopkins Legacy so fair as to the amount negro Sarah, I do hereby give and bequeath unto my daughter Harriett Stancill to her and her heirs forever the said negro Slave Sarah and her increase Also I give and
bequeath unto Miss Arsena Mayo fifty dollars to her and her heirs forever to be raised out of my Estate in witness whereof I have to this Codicil annexed to my will and set my hand and seal the 15th day of May 1846

The following paper writing purporting to be the last will and Testament of Daniel Hopkins dec'd is duly exhibited in open court for probate and its execution duly proven by the oaths of John Porter, Henry Stancell, the subscribing witnesses thereto at the same time the Codicil annexed thereto is also offered for probate as a part of said will and its execution duly proven by the oaths of William C. Leigh & Jesse W. Leigh the subscribing witnesses thereto--- upon which
it is ordered they the whole be recorded Whereupon Jesse Stancill the serving Executor named in said will (Jarrett Hopkins the other one Named in said will being dead) comes into Court and qualifies as such by taking the oath prescribed by law-Mrs. Mary Hopkins widow of
the said Daniel the testator comes into court and defends from the said will and her defence is ordered to be entered of record.
