Ethelreda is said to be the illegitimate daughter of King Henry VIII, although he never acknowledged her.  He is also said to have bribed John MATLE to claim he was her father, though John did not marry Joan, so Ethelreda was born out of wedlock.  It is said the King's favor towards Ethelreda was the foundation of our subject's rise in status and prosperity.
